WALL-E MEETS ALEXA WITH AMAZON'S NEW ASTRO HOME ROBOT
It's been long rumored that Amazon will be launching a home robot, and now we finally get to see it. Get to know Amazon Astro, the result of what you get when traversing Disney's WALL-E with Alexa. Astro is being sold as part of Day 1, a program that allows users to register to request an invite when it is sent. This effectively saved the company from another catastrophic phone fire if Astro sold poorly, and meant that only enough was produced for the benefit it made. Most importantly, Astro costs $999 - initially. When fully released, it will cost $1,449.99.
Astro has a number of privacy and security features that are important considering the access rights to your home. He can see stairs and obstacles, and will try to avoid pets in your house. Almost all data is processed on the device, such as images and raw sensor data in your home. Once Astro has outlined your home, you can also define the out-of-bounds area and disable all cameras, microphones, and pushbutton detectors. When you stream audio or video to the cloud, there is a clear LED at the top and an image for your video image or other display will appear.
Astro has several other functions. For example, when you are not at home, Astro can move around your house and stream the room view to your smartphone or even send an alert to your phone when an unknown person is detected. He can check if you have the ingredients you'll need to prepare a meal later, or check if you left the stove on accidentally. Alexa Guard can also detect sounds from smoke alarms, carbon monoxide alarms or broken glass. It integrates with Ring and Ring Protect Pro, and can even record video to your Ring cloud storage. After all, Astro works like a portable Alexa device and can play your favorite shows, podcasts or music while you're watching alone around the house.
Astro will be available in limited quantities and invites will be sent later this year. The device was then shipped shortly thereafter.
