BMW iX SUV

THE BMW iX SUV POINTS THE AUTOMAKER IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION FOR EVs.

The combination of the i3's interior and the latest EV technology makes the iX a winner.

The BMW iX 2022 is the first of the next generation of the German automaker's all-electric portfolio, bringing a new sense of luxury and style that electric SUVs have not yet brought to market.

While the iX will be available in two versions at launch, only the more powerful 2022 BMW iX xDrive50 will be sold in the US.

The model is not built like a BMW electric vehicle, but exactly like an electric BMW. The nuanced differences allow the SUV to appear complete and complete from the start, packed with the meetings and functions of a traditional X-SUV. Sitting in the car, looking around, touching the soft surfaces and admiring the high-tech screen, he felt perfect.

That nuance is the star with an exterior that carries the signature look of the BMW kidney grille which is vertically oriented but filled with black components that serve as a nervous center of the sensory system.

The shift to a more comfortable view of the vehicle from the side and rear reveals a sleek model with electronically-opening doors that only need to press a button and don't require bulky handles. Sleek exterior lights connect the car to the i3.

It is powered by a lithium-ion battery combined with the front and rear engines. The combined engine output is 516 horsepower and 564 lb-ft of torque which is instantly available when you accelerate.

Based on BMW's new electric vehicle architecture, the 2022 iX xDrive50 moves smoothly on uneven roads and carries its weight evenly. This SUV isn't heavy enough to feel slow, but its power and performance make the car move quickly and easily on the road.

The SUV comes with a "B" driving mode, which is activated via a newly designed gear selector switch and allows pedal driving, for about 300 miles, which is pretty easy to store. Placing the vehicle in this mode allows Jeep to recover its performance in the event of a slowdown and assists braking by combining electronic braking with friction.

This is an essential component for driving, especially on country roads where the iX accelerator pedal allows fast acceleration and a powerful ride, but relying on traditional brake friction can reduce deceleration.

Pedal driving remains one of the biggest selling points for electric vehicles. Best seen on country roads, but also effective in city traffic. Once you get used to the job, a lot of sympathy for the driving style comes from the way the system is set up.

It slows down too much and the model slows down too much. Too little and regeneration is not as effective as it could be and turns out to be very useless. BMW calibrates the iX very well.

With a level 2 connection, the iX can be charged from zero to 100 percent in under 11 hours.

Luxury car manufacturers designed the iX to have almost the same steering wheel requirements as the X5. The fatigue response required a larger input than desired, but at a slower speed, but the model proved agile.

The SUV's unique hexagonal steering wheel is extremely practical, offering more passenger space below and better visibility from above, while also enabling traditional functionality that doesn't interfere with driving.

The surround-view camera also aids visibility, although the forward view is usually wide open thanks to the low dashboard design and enabled by the lack of buttons, knobs and switches.

The interior design follows the typical BMW style. There's a lot of free space on the dashboard that likes to shine on the windshield and block the view. Thin ventilation slots in the center of the dashboard and at the edges give the model a feeling of spaciousness.

Like previous i-Brand models, the sporty interior design of the iX is made from recycled and durable materials. The door substructure is made of 100% recycled materials, while the visible parts are made of 30% recycled materials. The car control panel is characterized by durable wood. The seat is made of Dinamica microfiber, which is 50% recycled polyester. The pads are made of 100% recycled nylon, some of which comes from fishing nets that previously polluted the ocean.

All of this plays the role of BMW's recently launched concept car, demonstrating how circular manufacturing practices can evolve in future vehicles.

BMW equipped the iX with a panoramic glass roof with an electrochromic shade. The roof cannot be opened, but allows sunlight to diffuse through the cabin lighting. On a very sunny and warm day in southern Germany during the test, the roof didn't let in much sun or heat, but it did help to harmoniously integrate the car and sky.

The SUV's infotainment system is located under a curved and elongated body that contains a combination of fully digital tools. 14.9-inch control screen and 12.3-inch information screen. The instrument cluster effectively displays all the necessary information, but thanks to the front display, you barely have to look down.

The car's infotainment system requires a bit of attention, especially if you want to set the temperature control. This is the debut of the latest iteration of the iDrive system, which works in a very similar way to the previous generation, but with more options and functions hidden in the multi-text menu after the graphical menu.

Air conditioning on the go is a time-consuming job that too often takes your eyes off the road for too long. If the plan is to get drivers to use more of the enhanced functionality of iDrive 8's voice commands, it's likely that the system's ease of use will lead them to do so.

Mobile phones as a major technology and smartphone app integration is a must for modern drivers and the features are constantly being updated to enhance the mobile experience.

One of the best features for Apple iPhone users is the integration of Apple Maps into the car's on-board navigation system. This allows users who have paired their phones and are working with CarPlay to receive instructions on the infotainment screen and heads-up display. This is a welcome change from the game in terms of security and ease of use.

The seats in the quiet cabin of the iX, like the rest of the BMW lineup, are very comfortable. Fortunately for passengers, the standard four-zone automatic air conditioner also works. Heated seats, heated vertical surfaces and ventilated seats are available.

Driving on a dedicated electric vehicle platform gives the iX plenty of passenger and cargo space for a model of its size. The SUV's folding rear seats are shared 40/20/40, which allows for multiple configurations to transport large loads.

The BMW iX for 2022 starts at $84,195, which is a huge price tag that doesn't include any available state or federal incentives. Despite being expensive, the iX won the MSRP thanks to BMW, which sells at all levels. The IX doesn't compromise on its owner's style or range, making it an instant winner, especially when compared to the Tesla Model X and Audi E-Tron.
