GOOGLE TV PLANNING TO OFFER FREE CHANNELS

Google TV, the search engine giant's smart TV platform based on the Android operating system and supporting Chromecast-like devices like Smart TVs, will soon have support for free TV channels.

According to a Protocol report, Google is in talks with a free, ad-supported streaming TV provider about the ability to add these channels to its smart TV platform. It will feel similar to traditional TV with commercial breaks.

Free streaming channels are expected to be available on Google TV in the coming weeks or months, but the company can wait to announce the initiative with its smart TV partners sometime early next year.

In terms of usage, users are likely to be provided with a dedicated live TV menu to watch channels. Streaming channels will be served on the smart TV along with terrestrial programming that can be called up with the antenna.

What Google is trying to do is nothing new. Smart TV platform Roku has launched a similar platform with around 10,000 TV episodes and movies. It also has more than 200 free channels. TV manufacturers like Samsung and LG have also integrated free streaming channels into their platforms.

Google entered the free TV streaming category for the first time with the introduction of the Android TV platform in 2014. It had a live channel framework to incorporate live programming from streaming apps and broadcasters, but never got much.
